OALA Digital Seal

OALA will launch Digital Seal May 27, 2019

With the increase in use of digital documents, many professional associations including the AALA, BCSLA, MALA and OAA have moved to a digital seal to ensure reliability of the document author and to increase efficient transfer of documents, especially those requiring multiple professional stamps. In addition, municipalities have started to request digitally sealed documents.

After extensive evaluation of the Digital Signature market, OALA Council approved the selection of Notarius to provide the OALA Digital Seal to Members.

OALA Ski Day 2019

February 1, 2019
Alpine Ski Club, 17-242 Arrowhead Rd
Collingwood, ON

Thank you to everyone who participated in the OALA Ski Day on February 1! The OALA would also like to extend a big thank you to our member volunteers and helpers throughout the day which included Sue Ann Laking, Jacqueline Viscardi, Glenn O’Connor and Luke Kairys. A big thank you is also extended to the staff of the Alpine Ski Club, who continue to go the extra mile to make our events go so smoothly.

We had a gorgeous day on the slopes, with fast snow and clear skies.

During the Après Ski we recognized and awarded the racers and ‘retro-skiers’ and drew for the grand prize draws. This year’s winner of the Fun Race (where the goal is to match your time) went to Brad Nicholas with a match time of 0.00 seconds! Then to the costume contest vote for the best “Retro Ski Party” outfit, which was awarded to Luke Kairys for his “Tight & Bright” ensemble.

The OALA continues to see Ski Day registration grow, this year with 124 people in attendance! Proceeds from the OALA Ski and Golf Days go to support the landscape architecture programs at the University of Guelph and Toronto, and this would not be possible without such wonderful membership participation and the incredible support from sponsors.

Municipal elections: time for landscape architects to speak up

Across Ontario, 444 municipal council elections will take place on Monday, October 22, 2018.

The election period provides the perfect occasion for landscape architects to reach out to local leaders and talk about the value that the profession brings to communities.

Municipalities are critical stakeholders for landscape architecture. Not only do they employ landscape architects directly, their leadership on local issues connects them closely to both public and private sector land development.

It is vital for Mayors, Councillors, Reeves and others to understand the value that landscape architects bring to the table.

OALA Council is encouraging members to contact their local candidates, set-up meetings and talk to them about landscape architecture.

Don’t worry about what to say. Materials are available for you. The information we have includes:

Simply contact Executive Director Aina Budrevics at 416.231.4181 ext.1 or to report on the meetings you arrange or any engagement you already have with local candidates.  You may even want to take photos and so we can share them with your OALA colleagues.

More information on these elections – such as voting locations, advance poll dates and names of registered candidates – can generally be found on your local municipality’s website.

You can find out if you are on your local voters list at

Please participate by going to vote on October 22 (or at an advance poll).

OALA Golf Day 2018

The 16th annual OALA Golf Day took place on Friday, August 17th at the Royal Ontario Golf Club, and was another successful event. This year, we had record attendance of over 135 golfers registered for the event! A big thank you is also extended to our volunteers during the day: Corin Latimer, Don Parsons, and Jacqueline Viscardi.

The rain held out for most of the day, and a great round of golf was able to be had. OALA members were welcomed by Attorney General Caroline Mulroney MPP (York-Centre) and MPP Stephen Crawford (Oakville) during lunch, with conversation and photo opportunities, as well as a special greeting from Minister Mulroney.

The event ended with the Unilock sponsored dinner where Aina Budrevics, OALA Executive Director, and Sarah Manteuffel, OALA Coordinator, announced prize winners and giveaways. The prize tables were full of items donated from our sponsors, and we would like to thank them for their contributions as many went home as winners.

Most importantly, we were able to donate $5,000 and $10,000 cheques to both the University of Toronto and the University of Guelph Endowment Funds. This annual Golf Day event as well as our Ski Day event raise funds to help the Landscape Architecture programs at these Universities. OALA Vice President Kendall Flower accepted the cheque on behalf of the University of Toronto, and presented the University of Guelph cheque to Brendan Stewart, OALA Council Representative for the University of Guelph, who accepted the cheque on behalf of the University and shared a few words of thanks. Thank you to all golfers, volunteers, and sponsors as well as the staff at the Royal Ontario Golf Club who made this day possible.

And the day’s winners were:
