Reporting to the Manager of Park and Natural Heritage Planning, the Tree Preservation/Landscape Planner will lead the administration and review of permits submitted under the Town’s Tree Preservation By-law, including responding to inquiries from residents and Councillors, helping to educate and advise the public on tree preservation matters, and attending court proceedings as required. Additionally, the Tree Preservation/Landscape Planner provides expert landscape, tree preservation and forest management input on the preparation and implementation of policies, plans and by-laws related to the Town’s provision of parks, protection of trees, and protection and enhancement of the Greenway System. You will also review development applications of all types (Official Plan Amendments, Zoning by-law Amendments, Subdivisions, Site Plans, Minor Variances and Consents) and comment on tree preservation, landscaping, parkland dedication requirements, and protection/restoration of natural heritage features in support of the Town’s Official Plan, Parks Plan, and Sustainability Metrics. The Tree Preservation/Landscape Planner is required to conduct field visits and to review and inspect landscape works and parks secured through the development process.
Your university degree in Landscape Architecture, Forestry/Arboriculture, Planning or a related discipline is complemented by four (4) years of related experience. You have knowledge/experience with tree and natural feature preservation, along with excellent written and oral communication skills. You have G.I.S., spreadsheet and word processing computer skills, and are able to work as part of the team while managing your time on an independent basis. You demonstrate the Town’s corporate values of care, collaboration, courage, and service. Knowledge of municipal organizational structure, procedures and policies is essential along with the ability to read and review engineering and landscape drawings. You must also be familiar with provincial legislation including the Ontario Planning Act, Municipal Act, Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan, and the Endangered Species Act. Arborist certification and/or knowledge with respect to arboricultural practices, Tree Risk Assessment certification, ecological restoration experience including Ecological Land Classification and/or Ontario Wetland Evaluation System certification, and graphic design abilities will be considered assets. In addition, you possess a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license, and have access to a vehicle for use on corporate business, including to conduct site inspections (mileage compensated), and will be required to provide proof of vehicle insurance upon hire.
The salary for this position is $81,825 to $95,039.
