The Engineering Services Department, Operations Division is accepting applications for the Supervisor, Operations – Forestry position.  This position is reporting to the Coordinator, Forestry and Landscape Architecture, this position is responsible for administering a comprehensive Town Forestry program, supervising union, non union staff and Town contractors, ensuring that forestry related service requests are dealt with in a timely manner and also reviewing and commenting on development applications as they relate to the forestry portfolio.

The positions’ normal working hours will be Wednesday through to Sunday to ensure that the Town may provide the best service coverage possible. Hours will be 40 hours per week plus overtime as required.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Lead project teams in planning and implementing projects directly related to Forestry activity ie: tree insect and disease suppression, tree removal programs, pruning programs, watering programs, forestry inventories, forest/tree health assessments, tree hazard mitigation, etc.
  • Author forestry reports and providing project information to the general public and various stakeholders;
  • Implement forestry best practices such as tree inspection and trimming cycles, tree watering programs tree hazard reviews, and other such activities with regards to maintaining the urban forest
  • Implement and enforce tree planting standard setbacks, tree planting guidelines for naturalized areas, species selection design and other such activities with regards to planning the urban forest
  • Participate in negotiations with the development community regarding tree issues such as tree retention, tree planting, tree removals and tree compensation
  • Maintain a “master tree inventory” (filing and collecting as-built drawings, building a comprehensive database – preferably in a searchable and updatable GIS based format – for real time field use, reporting and updating)
  • Woodlot management and the development of a cyclical inspection regime
  • Street tree management and the development of a cyclical inspection and pruning regime
  • Respond to complaints and inquiries in a timely manner whilst having an understanding of all ongoing in-house or contracted tree contracts being implemented by the Town
  • Prepare tender documents related to forestry work
  • Build budget projections and implement current years’ budgeted work in a timely manner
  • Cultivate relationships with the Region, conservation authorities, Milton Hydro and other authorities to ensure that best forestry practices are applied on roads, in developments, natural and naturalized areas throughout Town
  • This position will be required to provide specific weekend staff coverage for other Operations staff for Town snow removal activities. This includes but is not limited to: directing Town contractors and Town staff with various snow clearing activities within the time limits set by Council and all provincially regulated/mandated snow removal standards;
  • This position is subject to overtime shifts to deal with emergency situations (ie. ice storm activities, snow clearing activities, tree hazard amelioration and other such duties)
  • Complies with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating guidelines and the Occupational Health & Safety Act
  • Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with Department objectives

Education and Experience

  • Minimum three (3) years experience in a related field; preferably in municipal Forestry or Lanscape Architecture.
  • Post-secondary diploma/degree in Urban Forestry, Landscape Architecture, Horticultural Science and/or equivalent related education
  • An International Society of Arboriculture Certification is an asset
  • Travel to work sites and between work locations is required
  • Understanding of the majority of the common native and Carolinian tree species endemic to southern Ontario
  • A comprehensive understanding of all ornamental and non-native but non-invasive species that are suitable for Milton’s urban areas;
  • A comprehensive understanding of invasive species and how to implement suppression and/or eradication programs of same
  • Knowledge of horticultural best cultural practices in relation to urban trees and shrubs (i.e., Tree trimming and pruning, knowledge of soils and soil remediation, knowledge of species morphological characteristics to determine right tree – right place, knowledge of species specific drought tolerance, salt tolerance and preferred planting times, etc.);
  • Knowledge of municipal tree standards, subdivision and site plan design and overall landscape architectural plan reading and interpretation of same
  • Supervisory expererience is an asset
  • Proficient in Windows based software including Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Proficency in Autodesk AutoCAD software, ESRI GIS Software and AMANDA software is an asset.

  • Ability to meet deadlines under pressure and adapt to changing priorities

Salary Range: $69,511 – $86,889 (currently under review)
